In situ site remediation


Remediation technologies that do not involve the extraction of soil and/or groundwater are classified as in situ technologies. These techniques present several advantages compared to those needing a preliminary excavation (ex situ), mainly related to lower costs, limited impact on site accessibility and logistics during remediation and higher overall environmental compatibility.

In situ remediation technologies

The most common in situ technologies are based on well-known remediation mechanisms as physical processes (i.e. Soil Vapor Extraction, Air Sparging - where contaminants are physically removed from subsoil and treated above ground), and biological processes (i.e. Bioventing, Bio Sparging - where contaminants are directly degraded below ground surface). Other in situ technologies are based on chemical oxidation processes and involve the introduction of chemical oxidants (i.e. ozone, oxygen peroxide, etc.) into the subsurface, to degrade ground water or soil contaminants into less harmful chemical species.

Before conducting a full-scale in situ remedial work, the execution of laboratory and/or pilot tests is always strongly advisable.

NCE's staff has developed, starting from early 1990s, a very strong experience on design, installation, pilot and laboratory testing, managing and monitoring of in-situ remediation works for soil and groundwater.

  • Multi-Phase Extraction (MPE);
  • Air Sparging (AS) and Biosparging (BS);
  • In-Situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO).
